HISTORICAL REVIEW ABOUT SKIN WHITENING

The bleaching properties of hydroquinone were accidentally discovered in the U.S.A. during World War II. Tanners wearing rubber gloves complained about having discoloured areas on hands and forearms. After all the possible pathological hypothesis were eliminated, a study of every chemical element involved incriminated an intermediary agent used in rubber synthesis: hydroquinone.

The idea of using this molecule to voluntarily depigment skin was quickly picked up as at that time, the only depigmenting products were dangerous mercurial peroxygenated derivatives.

Further research determined the maximum dosage above which the effect is irreversible. Furthermore, irritation and sensitization appeared. Hydroquinone usage level was thus limited to 5% and then to 2%  in France. Today, hydroquinone is considered as carcinogenic and a legal procedure is implemented to prohibit its use in cosmetics at the European level.

Wildberry Extract, an exciting new functional ingredient from Professional Solutions, represents an important advance in skin lightening agents. The result of considerable research and developmental effort, Wildberry Extract is the outgrowth of an innovative and thorough analysis of the biochemical nature of melanogenesis and the biophysical considerations that affect its numerous pathways. To summarize the importance of this new cosmetic active: Wildberry Extract - in contrast to presently available products - not only inhibits the progress of skin darkening, it also effectively reduces existing pigmentation.

The primary mechanism of action involved here is tyrosinase inhibition. However, this effect is further supported by a second level of functionality: Wildberry Extract also has the capacity to naturally degrade existing skin melanin with exceptional efficacy. A number of associated enzyme systems participating in the melanogenetic pathway are believed to be affected by specific actives in Wildberry Extract's proprietary formulation. Thus, this novel two-tiered approach results in more "preemptive" and longer term skin tone lightening and color evening-out than is possible from conventional skin lighteners. Significantly, preliminary data from ongoing human clinical trials over a three-month period solidly substantiate these claims.

The active ingredients found in Wildberry Extract are entirely derived from a natural, botanical source. Wildberry Extract is used together with Titanium Dioxide as a sunscreen, for optimum product function.
